The Black Butte Mercury Mine: Oregon Superfund Site
This mine near Cottage Grove, Oregon was in operation for around 80 years. Pilings and waste left behind has been a huge mercury contributor to local creeks flowing into larger water bodies (EPA Region 10: The Pacific Northwest - Black Butte Mine, 2014). Long term clean up, monitoring, and a community involvement plan for citizens has been established. |

The 303(d) list is used for identifying polluted and impaired waters (EPA.gov). Required by the Clean Water Act, each state is responsible for compiling the list and creating a Total Maximum Daily Load (TDML) which sets a maximum value for a given pollutant. Long term plans to meet water quality standards are developed in an effort to identify sources and improve the overall health of streams, lakes and rivers (EPA, 2012).
The Oregon DEQ has published a database with information on current 303(d) lists, TMDL's and monitoring reports.
-Search by watershed or water body then choose mercury as the pollutant from the drop down list.
